THE starting point is alongside the river at Huertas Nuevas, 4 km along the road towards Ronda. After crossing the river bridge along the road, turn sharp left following a track back towards the railway line. Park shortly before reaching the railway.

Distance 11 kms, 500m (600m including descent/ascent to Hundidero)

The path starts at the junction on the GR7 where the GR7 meets the river path from Benaojan. Head up the hill in the direction signposted Montejaque. At the track junction (Pt 15) continue left along the main track and follow all the way to the top of the ridge , passing points 255 and 392. At the top of the ridge is a farm (Pt 016). Continue past this to a small chapel and then zigzag down the track towards Montejaque, coming out on the road just after passing the cemetery.

Turn right up towards the village and follow road up to Y-shaped junction where it is straight on to the centre of village and sharp right to continue on the road out of the village (Pt 921). We go sharp right, staying on the main road and pass two tapas bars (one on each side of the road) which offer some good eating options (I prefer the one on the right hand side, a little further up from the other).

Continue up the road to the edge of the village, where bear left along a track. Follow this for some 500m with a metal fence on our right hand side for much of the way until passing a white cortijo/barn with double metal gates. Just after the fence ends and we have an open field to our right ( point 17), we take smaller track down to right which leads down through the field towards the river bed. Just before reaching the level of the river the track forks and we take the smaller track to the right heading to a fence around some allotments. We pass on the river side of these and cross the river (note – it may be dry in summer). Just after crossing the river look for a wire gate in the fence to our right (#931) – do not follow the path up the hill. Go through the wire gate and head up over a small ridge which cuts out a bend in the river.

Drop down the other side of the ridge , passing though a gap in another wire fence and head back down towards the river bed. Follow along the left hand side of the river and go through another wire gate (#932)

Follow close to river bed and soon a small dam appears at the top of the ridge ahead of us , and then a larger one to the right, comes into view. We are in the valley that was to have been flooded when these dams were built in the 1920s to dam the river just upstream from where the river went underground in the Hundidero cave, but the river simply changed its course and found another route underground before the dam! Strangely many maps (e.g. the 1:25000 series) show the reservoir to this day – so we are now apparently walking on water! Head towards the bottom of the smaller dam – to your left you can see the depth markers (in meters above sea level) which tell us we would have been 50 meters under water had the river not diverted.

We scramble up the steep path heading to the left edge of the small dam, where we join the roped path down to the Hundidero cave. Though it is 100 meters below us, it is well worth the diversion as the cave entrance is spectacular. If not, turn left and follow the roped path, then track, up to point 20, where we take a smaller path to the right, which brings us out on the road opposite a small cortijo.

Cross the road and pass to the right of the cortijo into a field. Go around the left side of this field and pick up a clear track . Bear left when it forks and continue up to the small ridge at point 171. From here follow the track down, swinging a little to the right to join another track which takes down the edge of a small ridge, heading always in the direction of the clearly-visible Ronda. Bear right at bottom of ridge and head down to point 15 to rejoin our outward route.
