STARTING from the Hotel Molino Cuatro Paradas in Benaojan, follow the footpath south down the river for 1,2 km until reaching signboard and bridge over river. Cross bridge, head straight then over another bridge and bear right past Hotel Molino del Santo. You are now at point 43 on the route. Turn right up track to village. On reaching village keep heading uphill until reaching the Cortes road, hopefully somewhere near a parking area and fountain. Just opposite this is a signboard to the Llanos de Libar. (Pt 58). The fact that there is a signboard does not indicate that this path is waymarked!

You start with two zigzags, first right then left, to get onto path slowly ascending towards the SW: Come out at track by deserted embutidos factory. Turn left onto track and continue until sharp bend with metal gate at right hand side Go through this gate (Pt 57).

Pick up a path through this gate and follow first almost level then gently ascending for 1,5 km until reaching a larger track, by ruined cortijo. (Pt 56). Bear right here onto wide track and follow this for about 1 km until finding path off to right going gradually uphill (pt 48)

This is an old vereda and is cobbled in places. It climbs up to a small pinnacle where the path forks (#49) . Take the left option and continue diagonally upwards to point 50 then bear right towards a clear col in the ridge (puerto de Cofrio) at point 55. Cross the col and look for a gate in the fence. Go through this and pick up a clear path which goes gradually down to meet the track through the Llanos de Libar at point 82.

Follow the track through the Llanos past points marked as 81, 80 and 79. At point 79, where there is a GR7 signboard, we leave the GR7 and continue straight through a gate. Continue past a farm and cross the meadows to a gate at point 78. Go through this and pick up a path heading slightly to the left towards a small valley heading in a southerly direction. The path soon becomes more obvious and you follow it up over a col and past point 407. The path now drops down to a track junction and signboard where we turn left.

Almost immediately find a smaller path off to the right which avoids the winding curves of the track. It emerges lower down on the same track where we turn right and continue down until reaching a flatter area. Continue down the main track until, shortly before crossing the path of a stream (pt 678) we take a smaller path off to the left which goes down more steeply until re-emerging on the track. We go straight across this and continue along a path, first behind an orchard and then along the back of an extraordinarily ugly housing development. At the end of the houses turn left , then right then left down Calle Libar, to get down to the main road through Cortes. Turn right along the main road past the bullring into the centre of the village.

If continuing down to Estacion Cortes, from the village head down the hill from the bullring, looking for a lower road to pick up a marked path down. This crosses the road once, continues down to the valley floor where we turn right to reach the station.

I took this walk yesterday - at a very leisurely pace - it was absolutely beautiful! A clear blue sky and just the right amount of sunshine for an early spring walk.

Evidence of the floods was everywhere... debris hanging from the tops of trees showed exactly how high the water had risen and, in several parts, the hillside had been washed away taking the path with it. So, we had a couple of tricky bits to manouevre but it was fun.

Take some time to do this walk - it is not strenuous and it connects you so beautifully with nature. You can literally hear the stillness, punctuated occasionally with the tinkle of goat bells and the reassuring voice of the river... bliss!
