A CIRCULAR route of approximately 20 km. taking you to and from the centre of Ronda. You can, of course, just walk in one direction and take the train or taxi to return.

Leave the Hotel Molino Cuatro Paradas heading north up the river footpath. After 1 km, reach Hotel Cueva del Gato where you bear left and take a path at the side of the icecream kiosk (do not cross the river bridge). Continue along the path and through some fields until, just before reaching a track, you look out for a footbridge over the river at point 004. Cross this and continue up path until reaching track. Here turn left, cross railway line, then turn right along broad track

Continue along this track until reaching junction with GR-7 (pt 005). Here bear right and continue along track until reaching road. Head straight up road for 300m until heading straight along track at next bend (still following GR-7). When track starts to veer to right (Pt 006) we bear left uphill along smaller path. This emerges at track junction at point 007.

Here the official GR-7 route continues straight up the hill, but we turn right then bear left up the track until reaching the ridge at point 009. Here we have an option – if heading for the centre (shopping) area of Ronda we turn left and head up ridge of the tajo (with great views across to the city). At point 008 bear right alongside a stone wall until emerging by the vivero (nursery). Continue up the road alongside the tajo into town.

Otherwise continue straight along the road/track, going left at the next fork (though the right hand fork also leads to the same point just before the barrio de San Francisco). Continue along the quiet road, with great views from below the gorge and bridge, until reaching point 010. Here we can turn sharp left up a path to the old part of the city. With or without this diversion, continue along the road to reach a roundabout in the Barrio de San Francisco, there are several eating and drinking options around here.

Turn right up the road until reaching point 234. Turn right here. The road immediately forks and we take the left hand option. continuing until the junction at point 117 where we turn right. It is straight from here, first down to cross the arroyo de Sijuela, then up to the ridge at point 116. It is then down again to 115 and up to the next ridge at point 114.

The path joins a track at point 012 (if walking in the opposite direction take care at this point to bear left along the footpath and not continue on the track). Continue down to a ruined cortijo at point 113. Here bear left off the track and continue down a path towards Estacion Benaojan. Follow this all the way down to the river path just below the road bridge. Turn right and return to hotel.

Distance: 19,5km

Ascent: 700m.
