Estacion Cortes - Jimera

THE walk starts at the railway station in Cortes or Hotel El Gecko and, after crossing the bridge over the river, the road starts to climb uphill.

Eventually you will see a large rock in the left side verge with a yellow and a white stripe painted on it. This is the standard path marking with two parallel stripes.

Shortly after this there is a dust road to the left. Follow this as it passes a few houses and fincas and climbs up giving views over the Estacion and towards Cortes.

Further on you will come to a Y junction. Be careful here. There are paths in both directions but you need to take the left fork.

As you walk down you will see a track to the right and then an official sign for Jimera and Cortes. Keep straight on following the road. You will climb for a while and then the road starts curving to the left and you start dropping down hill until you reach a red gatehouse with James Bond style security systems. Follow the road and then under the bridge crossing the river (dry or wet). The dirt road is to the right and then is straight for quite a while as it heads towards Jimera.

Eventually the road arrives at a river crossing but don't cross unless you want to circle back to Cortes.

Cross the railway at KM 104.8 and you are now on a road between the railway and a fenced field.

After approximately 1.5kms of farm road you get to fence followed by a couple of streams - again dry or wet depending on the recent weather. Be careful as the path from here is well marked but it was marked coming from the other direction, so all the markings are facing away from you. You often need to look back to see them. The marks are on trees, rocks and fences. Between the last railway crossing and the next one I counted 26 markers but I could be wrong!

From the streams you wander through small woods past oak tress, cork trees and through small pastures - none of it strenuous.

Be careful when you reach a two-metre high tree stump with . This is marked coming from Jimera so think in reverse.

From here on you stay at the same level and distance from the railway - so if you start climbing uphill rethink!

The track will bring you to a level crossing and then from here it is dirt track past an old mill and natural swimming pool then on past walnuts to Estacion de Jimera de Libar and a well earned beer at Bar Allioli.
