Azvi are currently working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on behalf of the railway infrastructure company ADIF replacing all the old ballast, track and points on the railway line that runs through the Guadiaro Valley. The line has been closed for several months to allow for the major upgrading of the single track line - including raising the headroom in tunnels for eventual electrification of the line, converting to dual guage, resignalling, and protecting against rockfalls. Even the stations are being refurbished with new roofs and platforms are being raised and lengthened. The line is due to reopen to traffic on April 4 - although work will continue on improvements for a considerable time afterwards with all level crossings being replaced by bridges or tunnels.

When the new infrastructures planned under Plan Malaga come into service, the airport will have the capacity to attend 9,000 passengers an hour and 30 million passengers a year with suitable levels of security and service quality.
A new car park with 7 floors and 2,500 spaces, the new T3 terminal (due to open 15 March 2010), the construction of a second runway (opening late 2010 or early 2011) and more and better accesses are some of the mainstays of this project, with a firm commitment to social and economic growth in Malaga and Andalusia that, despite its magnitude, guarantees integration and environmental stability, placing the priority on Aena's ecological, social and planning commitment with the territory. The terminal area of the new airport, with a surface area of 385,000 m², will have 180 check-in desks (4 for special baggage), 48 boarding gates and 26 baggage reclaim carousels (one for special baggage). The passengers will have three road accesses (two on the motorway) and two car park buildings, with around 3,700 spaces.
The airfield will have two runways and several aircraft aprons with a total of 74 positions, 26 of them contact positions.
This project, with an investment of €1.775 billion, has turned Malaga airport into a benchmark amount Mediterranean tourist airports.
Some facilities including the new terminal area, are co-financed by the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) of the European Union.

Embalse de Montejaque flooded - 1 January 2010

The Embalse de Montejaque is an impressive site - normally a large dam without a reservoir. The engineer in charge did not realise the implications of trying to build a reservoir in limestone country. In theory it seemed a good idea, as the Rio Guaduares collected a lot of mountain water during the winter months. The river disappears at this point into a cave and a dam was built to stop it disappearing underground. After its completion, authorities waited for the reservoir to fill, only to discover that the water escaped via another underground outlet into the cave system. A pathway leads down from the road to this grand folly of engineering and makes an interesting short walk.
However, after the heavy downpours over the Christmas holiday in December 2009 the reservoir rapidly filled. There is some concern about the integrity of the dam structure in view of the enormous pressure of flood water against it and the fact it has not been regularly maintained since it was built. Concerned calls have been made to the Ayuntamiento in Montejaque who, in turn, have contacted Endesa - the electricity supply company - who are planning to send engineers to survey the structure.
The worry is that if the dam was breached it would release a torrent into the underground cave system that eventually emerges at the Cueva del Gato and then into the River Guadiaro. If that were to happen then the devastation along the course of the river would be considerably greater than that already seen.
