LAST YEAR, for the first time, the village of Montejaque held a Dia del Turismo – a day of tourism. A couple of coach-loads of Sevillians descended on the square to enjoy the hosting capabilities of this sleepy village of some 1,100 inhabitants. A game was under way… visitors had to pick up a card and go to the 17 establishments listed thereon, to get a sticker (sello) to prove patronage. All tapas were free – but if you bought a drink as well, you were entitled to a red sticker instead of a white one. If you returned your card with a minimum of five red stickers, you could enter the draw for the first prize (a hamper of Iberian pork products). Second prize (three red stickers) was for a smaller hamper, and one red sticker got you the chance in the third prize draw. I spent a very merry three hours collecting my stickers. At one bar, I ran in to request ‘uno sello’; the barman somehow misunderstood me, and produced a glass of white wine – and still more free tapas. Bloated and somewhat drunk, I turned in my completed card for the first prize draw (as I had somehow garnered nine red stickers). I didn’t win the hamper, but was happy to see it won by one of the visiting Sevillians – who was obviously delighted. This Saturday, 25 September 2010, from 11:00 a.m., I will be able to repeat this delightful experience. The ‘day of tourism’ will feature popular games, tasting of local products, a traditional festival, prizes to the participants, a DJ, concert band music, parades and costumes. It will also feature an over-fed and somewhat inebriated guiri, staggering around with a card with at least 10 red stickers! >> Read about last year's event - Montejaque's I Dia del Turismo - 2009
