A WEEKEND trip with the Boy Scouts nearly ended in disaster when one of the troop who was swimming in the River Guadiaro, Jimera de Libar almost drowned. Fortunately the quick response of teachers and the emergency services averted a tragedy.

The youngster was dragged under water close to the nearby dam where, allegedly, the sliding locks of the sluice gate had been removed. The rush of water when the barrier was raised was sufficient to drag the boy under water and trap him for five minutes. The child was not breathing when he was rescued from the river by teachers. The ambulance service, fire brigade, Guardia Civil and a Junta de Andalucia helicopter were also quickly on the scene. The boy resonded to resuscitation at the scene before being transferred to hospital.

The dam which is situated close to an old mill near the scout camp is normally an idyllic place to bathe. It is now closed for swimming while the Guardia Civil investigate who is responsible for removing the locks.
