THE Spanish Government has announced that its airports will become a hub for British travellers stranded around the world. Transport Minister Jose Blanco said: "We are going to give as many flight authorisations as Spain is capable of handling." Blanco said that Spain was already working with the British government "to facilitate the 70,000 people from Britain who are in North America getting home through Spain."

Several countries are now planning to open their airspace - Italy will resume flights from 6am GMT on Tuesday while Romanian airspace is open. Three passenger flights are due to leave the Netherlands on Monday night. Eurocontrol has said European air traffic set to return to normal on Thursday.

Flight restrictions across the UK will remain in place until 7am on Tuesday, when some airspace will reopen. Airspace from Scotland south to a line between Teesside and Blackpool will be open, with the possibility of restrictions further south being lifted later, the UK air traffic control company Nats said.

BAA added that when airports do open, passengers should still check the status of their flight with airlines before travelling to airports.
