THE Spanish Government has announced that its airports will become a hub for British travellers stranded around the world. Transport Minister Jose Blanco said: "We are going to give as many flight authorisations as Spain is capable of handling." Blanco said that Spain was already working with the British government "to facilitate the 70,000 people from Britain who are in North America getting home through Spain." Several countries are now planning to open their airspace - Italy will resume flights from 6am GMT on Tuesday while Romanian airspace is open. Three passenger flights are due to leave the Netherlands on Monday night. Eurocontrol has said European air traffic set to return to normal on Thursday. Flight restrictions across the UK will remain in place until 7am on Tuesday, when some airspace will reopen. Airspace from Scotland south to a line between Teesside and Blackpool will be open, with the possibility of restrictions further south being lifted later, the UK air traffic control company Nats said. BAA added that when airports do open, passengers should still check the status of their flight with airlines before travelling to airports. AIR:â–º British Airways is aiming to resume some flights from London airports from 7pm on Tuesday. Longhaul departures departing after 4pm and shorthaul after 7pm should operate. Airport operator BAA has asked passengers not to travel to its airports until further notice and to keep in touch with their carriers. RAIL:Eurostar, the high-speed passenger train service that links the UK and mainland Europe, will be running an extra 28 trains to help stranded passengers. The rail company announced that between Tuesday 20 and Sunday 25 April all 30,000 of the available standard class seats on its trains will be on offer at a special price of £89 one-way. Passengers have been urged to book online rather than turn up at rail stations. FERRY:â–º P&O Ferries – have availability on the Dover-Calais route in both directions, foot passengers are advised to turn up at the port when they’ll be accommodated on the next available crossing, passengers with vehicles are advised to pre-book. The HM Maritime and Coastguard Agency have granted exemptions to all ferries travelling from Dover to Calais to carry an extra 10% of passengers. COACH:Eurolines, the European coach arm of National Express has announced it will be providing an additional 4000 seats for routes to and from key European cities today and tomorrow. ADVICE:The Foreign Office has launched a special advice line for callers in the UK who are concerned about the well-being of relatives stranded overseas. The number is 020 7008 0000. Its website is also being updated regularly with information and advice about passengers' rights and the responsibilities of travel companies. Consular staff overseas are providing assistance including visiting airports and advising British nationals who have run out of funds.
