TRAIN operator RENFE is now selling tickets for trains between Ronda and Algeciras, starting April 23 upon completion of the engineering works that required the total closure of the line. Travellers can purchase tickets through the usual sales channels (web www.renfe.com, the information line 902 320 320 Renfe, travel agencies and stations).

The comprehensive improvement works required the interruption of services between Ronda and Algeciras since late October 2009. Since then, RENFE have offered an alternative transfer by road.

Although work will continue on the improvements, from 23 April, the train service will return to normal.

The investment of 176 million euros by Adif will increase the reliability and capacity of the line, which will enhance and improve travel for passengers and freight traffic.

This work has included completely relaying the track and improving the infrastructure and superstructure and preparation for future electrification.

The works are designed to allow an increase in freight trains and to contribute to the economic development of the Campo de Gibraltar and the Port of Algeciras, of which this railway line has been, since its commissioning, the natural outlet to the rest of Andalucia and Spain.

New schedules

There will be some modifications to the timetables. The Altaria service from Algeciras-Madrid will depart Algeciras at 08:24 and 15.08. And the return services will depart from Madrid at 08:40 and 15.05.

From April 23 all the trains will run to the new timetables from Algeciras station. The only exception will be the first Altaria departing from Algeciras at 08:24, whose passengers will be transferred by road to Ronda.

The local trains on the Algeciras-Granada route will maintain their current schedule:

• Algeciras-Granada: 07:00, 12:15 and 15.45
• Granada-Algeciras: 07:15, 13.50 and 17.25
• Ronda-Algeciras: 7:42
• Algeciras-Ronda: 18.50

Goods traffic

As with passengers, RENFE also arranged an alternative plan for freight trains while the line has been closed since last October. Container traffic was carried by road between Sevilla and the Campo de Gibraltar (and vice versa).

All freight services will also resume their normal routes from 23 April.
