IT's official - it has been the wettest winter in Andalucia since records began. The two months of December and January were already the fourth rainest on record. But when coupled with February it is the wettest period of all time.

The extent, consistency and sheer volume of rainfall has wreaked havoc on the region and caused more than one billion euros of damage.

Fausto Polvorinos, meteorologist for the Malaga Weather Centre revealed that the deluges are due to “abnormal western weather patterns”.

Polvorinos explained: “South-westerly low pressure fronts are to blame for the torrential rainfall.

“Normally these weather patterns are restricted to just November and December, but this year, they have continued well into February. They are normally broken up by high pressure fronts."

The good news though is that the aquifers have been refilled and all seven of Malaga’s reservoirs were overflowing.
