Gaudiaro Rail Line Could Reopen on April 23, 2010

ANTONIO López, spokesperson for ADIF - the railway infrastructure company - has reported that the work to upgrade the Bobadilla to Algeciras line is progressing well. Teams are operating on a 24-hour, 7 day a week basis and the work on three tunnels in the first phase between Benaojan and Jimera de Libar is completed.

The difficult work on the tunnels between Cortes de la Frontera and San Pablo de Buceite is currently 50% completed.

The recent bad weather has not helped but as the work on the eleven tunnels has been a priority this has not been affected by the heavy rain.

Currently the old track is being lifted, all the old ballast is being removed and replaced and new concrete sleepers and dual-guage track are being relaid.

While the line has been closed there has also been considerable work done to protect the line from rockfalls and landslides.

Headroom has been increased in all the tunnels which will allow the eventual overhead electrication of the line and work has also been done on two new viaducts.

New signalling systems are also being installed and level crossings are being replaced by tunnels or bridges.

The railway stations at Benaojan, Jimera de Libar and Cortes de la Frontera have also benefitted from imrovements. The station roofs have all been retiled and platform heights are currently being raised to accommodate the new train services.

The line was closed on October 26, 2009 with Adif operating a bus service to connect all the stations and to link with the Madrid service from Bobadilla. Until the middle of January over 26,000 passengers had been carried on the buses, with 16,000 of those travelling to or from Madrid.
