FROM this weekend Clive Muir and Sue Eatock will be welcoming visitors to the Grazalema Information centre. The Sierra de Grazalema is one of the oldest designated natural park areas in Spain and the village of Grazalema, being at its geographic centre, needed an information resource for the huge number of visitors that head for Grazalema first and foremost when entering the park area. It will provide everything needed for all types of visitors interested in the natural world, gastronomy, culture and activities available in the area. Central to the Sierra de Grazalema, the village is around 25 minutes drive from Ronda. The proposal for Clive and Sue to take over the running of the information centre in Grazalema was born from their concern that visitors to Grazalema had not been receiving the very best information and help in order to make their stay both enjoyable and productive. Their project plan went through a series of tests and also went up against other businesses proposals. The plan that they put forward was deemed to be more sustainable with a good chance of success and so they were awarded the project by the mancomunidad de municipios of Cadiz province. The town council of Grazalema also saw our project as something that could benefit the entire area for many years to come. As well as a large number of guide books, maps, and other information sources, the shelves hold local artisan products and the walls provide space for exhibitions of artwork and photography. There is a welcoming atmosphere where information is in abundance and the staff can offer a selection of languages including Spanish, English, German and French. The centre can also arrange entrance permits for the restricted areas of Garganta Verde, El Torreon, El Pinsapar and Llano de Ravel. Mountain bikes are available for hire and there are plans afoot for assisted battery powered bikes and hybrid energy efficient mopeds to be added to the fleet of sustainable vehicles. The staff have an abundance of local knowledge and information to help all types of visitors to the area whether they are seeking quiet countryside walks, radical caving, climbing or cultural, gastronomical and village tours. On the lower floor is the information desk, products for sale including local crafts, a photo exhibition of flora and fauna to be found within the park (including English common names, Spanish common names and Scientific names), an audio / video room and toilets. Upstairs is an exhibition with an ethnographic theme. Open: Daily from 10am to 7pm Entry Permits: Permits for the four walking routes “El Torreon”, El Pinsapar”, “Garganta Verde” and “Llano del Ravel” can be obtained via the information centre either in person or by phone (see below). You will need to pick up the permission from the office. At the Information Centre you will need to provide the passport number of one person intending to walk the path, name of path (Torreon, Pinsapar, Garganta Verde, Llano de Ravel), date of intended walk, and the number of people in the group. Books for Sale: Covering various subjects of the area. Guide books for walking, ornithology, botany and other wildlife (Spanish and English).
