THE gleaming, cream-coloured Silver Cloud Rolls Royce came purring majestically up the windy, narrow street and into the plaza in the centre of Montejaque. The first of the classic cars to arrive, it settled itself outside the Elefante Amarillo Hotel as the plaza began to fill with the other cars which had braved the elements and the mountain roads and made the journey from Monda to Montejaque on a wet and windy Saturday morning. There followed 20 or so more cars - all classics ranging from a beautiful Silver Shadow Rolls Royce to a Mustang Convertible, a Posche 911, an MG Midget, a Roadster and a Caterham. Some of the cars seemed rather new... but it was a classic cars event and not vintage. I think the Silver Cloud, (a 1964 model of the type John Lennon liked to travel in, in those heady days of Beatlemania when he had more money than sense), fitted both categories. Unfortunately, the thunderstorms had prevented the open tops coming along and so there were fewer cars than expected. However, the spirit of the owners' was such that they doubled up in the travelling cars to join the trip anyway. And so the atmosphere was buzzing as they mixed with the locals, chatted animatedly and shared anecdotes about their experiences before enjoying lunch in the hotel.
