AFTER the devastating Christmas Eve floods across the Guadiaro Valley a huge cleanup operation is now under way. Estacion de Jimera de Libar and Estacion de Cortes have been declared disaster areas. The heavy rain caused the River Guadiaro to break its banks in low-lying areas causing flooding of some properties up to a depth of more than one metre. There has been considerable damage to local roads from rock falls and landslides. The Atajate to Jimera de Libar road is due to reopen tomorrow after being closed for two days. There are unconfirmed reports of livestock being carried away in the raging torrent and there have been sightings of sheep carcases on the weir at Estacion de Cortes. The rain abated today but there is still more heavy rain forecast in the next week. Click to view the Photograph Gallery - 24 December 2009Click to view the Photograph Gallery - 25 December 2009
