THE storms that first struck the province of Malaga on Christmas Eve have wreaked havoc. The rains have caused extensive damage in the towns and countryside alongside the River Guadiaro. Since Thursday, the Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Málaga (fire brigade) attended nearly a hundred call-outs in twenty municipalities in the province as a result of water and wind damage. In the Serrania de Ronda the Emergency Plan has been activated which includes the mobilisation of the various security forces, civil protection and municipal services. Two roads were cut off in the province by landslides yesterday afternoon due to rain and wind. The MA-8307 at Jimera de Libar and the A-7205 in Trapiche (Vélez-Málaga). Jimera de LíbarJimera of Líbar, close to the River Guadiaro, has been one of the villages most affected. Yesterday six families were evacuated after water flooded their properties to a depth of three feet. The six families were put up in the village hotel. Mayor of Jimera de Líbar, Mayte Dominguez, stated that they are the worst floods since 1947. "There is a lot of infrastructure damage. All the work we did on Christmas Eve clearing the mud has not served any purpose, the river is still rising." she said. Cortes de la FronteraFlooding from the Guadiaro river has also left a trail of destruction as it passes through La Cañada del Real Tesoro, in the town of Cortes de la Frontera. On Christmas Eve the central street was flooded by three feet of water. A dozen people were avacuated from their homes. Mayor Cortes de la Frontera, Francisco Marquez, said there is substantial damage to infrastructure. Click to view the Photograph Gallery
