THE forecast heavy rain and wind have caused the River Guaduaro to break its banks and has left some properties flooded and roads scattered with debris. Ayuntamientos (Town Halls) have mobilised volunteer groups to help evacuate residents from affected houses and have already started the clearing up operation.

Across Andalucia 22 roads are blocked and several rail links between Sevilla, Huelva, Granada and Jaén are also affected.

The access road to the Sierra Nevada is closed by an accumulation of snow.

80 litres per square metre of rain were collected in the last 24 hours in Grazalema, 54 in Málaga, 40 in Almería, 33 in Sevilla, 31 in Córdoba and 30 in Cádiz, and all that in addition to the rain which has fallen almost continuously since Sunday.

There are serious power cuts in the Cádiz Bay area, although supplies are expected to be restored during the day today. Some 1,500 homes are still affected in El Puerto de Santa María, Chiclana and San Fernando.

Lightening cut the power to Torrox in Málaga for 12 hours.

Many advertising hoardings and other items have been blown down, along with trees and the wall of a school in Córdoba, but despite the damage there are no reports of any injuries or fatalities in the region.

The Jimera de Libar to Atajate road is currently closed (25 December 2009) and the Benaojan to Ronda road is passable with caution. Please take care on the roads - there are many rock falls and landslides across the area. We'd recommend not to venture out unless your journey is essential.
