GRAINY television pictures will soon be a thing of the past in the Guadiaro Valley. The old analogue system will be switched off at the end of 2009. It will be replaced by Terrestrial Digital Television (TDT) which will offer better quality pictures, interactive service, audio options and radio stations. New televisions usually have inbuilt digital decoders, otherwise you will require a digital terrestrial set top box. Your TV aerial may also require some adjustment, and in some cases a signal amplifier may be required. Terrestrial Digital Television (TDT) is Spain's version of the UK’s Freeview system. The system provides digital television via your normal TV aerial on the roof. The old poor quality analogue signals are slowly being turned off and being replaced by high quality digital signals. These digital signals provide much clearer picture quality, multiply audio options and add more channels. Whereas you could normally receive 9 – 12 channels on analogue, there are up to 30 channels available digitally, depending on your location. TDT ScamResidents are warned, however, to beware of tricksters who are visiting homes in the province, especially those occupied by elderly residents, and telling them that their Digital Terrestrial Television receiver needs changing, only to then sell them a new one at “a very good price”. In most cases, the fraudsters are taking a receiver from one home and replacing it with another, to then go on to sell the receiver they have just removed at a nearby house, telling the occupants that they can have it at a special price thanks to a grant for pensioners. If they already have one, they convince them that it will not work once analogue TV is switched off, and offer to sell them a better one at half its true value. To seem more credible, they even ask for their victims’ ID. The Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce has reported that groups which are considered to be in danger of social exclusion will receive TDT decoders for free in the 28 towns where analogue TV will be switched off before the end of this year, which are: Coin, Frigiliana, Guaro, Monda, Nerja, Torrox, Velez-Málaga, Torremolinos, Algatocin, Alpandeire, Atajate, Benadalid, Benahavis, Benalauria, Benaojan, Benarraba, Casares, Cortes de la Frontera, Estepona, Farajan, Gaucin, Genalguacil, Igualeja, Jimera de Libar, Jubrique, Juzcar, Montejaque and Parauta. If you are over the age of 65 and are level II or III dependant, have a hearing or sight disability of 33 per cent or more, or are over the age of 80 and live alone or with another person of a similar age you can ask for your decoder in Malaga, Calle Duquesa de Parcent 8, second floor, at your local town hall, or thanks to Junta de Andalucia volunteers who will be distributing them. For more information www.televisiondigital.es or 901 2010 04. Many digital terrestrial channels on TDT are available for free - free to air. There are also a few pay/subscription channels planned on TDT - the first being GOL TV - a football channel. Many channels are able to broadcast their programmes with their original audio. So if a programme is being broadcast that was made in the UK or USA, then you may be able to change the Spanish audio soundtrack into an English audio soundtrack. Not all channels are broadcasting their programmes in their original language, but the majority of them do when they show a movie or a series. SET show American sitcoms (Lost) and series with English as an alternative language.
