THE comprehensive improvement works on the Bobadilla-Algeciras railway line through the Guadiaro Valley will start on Monday, 26 October 2009. And ADIF, the railway infrastructure company, have announced it is essential, due to the difficult nature of the terrain, for the temporary suspension of all rail traffic between Ronda and Algeciras for up to six months to allow 24 hour working.

Train operator RENFE has therefore established an alternative plan of transportation for passenger and freight trains to or from the Campo de Gibraltar.

Each day there are 12 passenger trains on the line – two Altaria return trips to Madrid plus another eight local trains to and from Algeciras from either Bobadilla or Granada. These services will now be replaced by a bus service and the times will be adjusted to fit in with the new journey times.

The Madrid service will link with the Altaria between Madrid and Antequera. Passengers will be taken to and from Antequera to meet the train and also stop at Ronda the other station that served the Madrid train. Buses from Algeciras will leave at 8.05 and 16.50 and from Antequera at 14.45 and 23.15.

Two buses will leave Algeciras for each train departure. One will travel direct to Ronda and then complete the journey to Granada. The other will stop at the various stations along the way. Phone 902 24 05 05 for details of the bus services.

To carry out this alternative plan a daily fleet of nine coaches will be used, supplemented by minibuses and taxis.

Freight container traffic will be transported by road from Algeciras to Seville and vice versa.
