TODAY is the Dia del Pilar, Spain’s National Fiesta, often known as Colombus day as it was on October 12 1492 that he discovered America. It is also the Day of the Armed Forces in Spain, but the parade in Madrid this year will be one marked by budgetary cutbacks. Even so 4,200 soldiers, with 209 vehicles and 58 planes will take part in and above the Plaza de la Lima. King Don Juan Carlos and Queen Doña Sofía will preside over the parade, and one of the new events this year will be the participation of flags from the United Nations, NATO and the European Union, in homage to 20 years of Spanish participation in peace missions abroad.
