THE Andalucian Health Service, SAS, has started a new translation service as part of its Salud Responde system.

Instant translations over the phone in as many as 46 languages are now available to any health worker in any public health centre in the region.

The service will prove popular with not only the nearly 500,000 foreigners and immigrants living in the region, but also could help some of the more than nine million tourists who visit the region each year. It will allow the doctor and patient to talk via a translator over a conference call from a central call centre.

Of the 46 languages, 11 are operative 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, while the others are available on working days from 8am to 6pm.

The first group includes German, English, Arabic, Chinese, French Portuguese and Russian, while the second group sees Dutch, Danish, Turkish and Armenian among others.

To make use of the system the health professional in a medical centre or hospital needs to call 902 505 060.

Since the translators are all professional medical translators, the patient is guaranteed a professional, reliable, free and confidential service which will prevent them having to find a medical translator and receive full impartial medical information.
