Motoring

THE Andalucian road network has improved considerably in recent years.

Today the region has over 24,000 kms/15,000 miles of motorways (autopistas), dual carriageways (autovias) and other roads of varying categories.

Due to the excellent condition of the roads and the relatively low volume of traffic on them private car is an excellent way to explore the area.

Vehicles can be hired through the offices of all major international car companies - and collected from major airports, train stations and all major town and cities around Andalucia. Most companies will only hire out to drivers over the age of 21. A valid driving licence is required.

Traffic drives on the right. It is compulsory for all occupants of the vehicle to wear seat belts. It is a legal requirement to carry two red warning triangles, a spare tyre and a set of replacement bulbs. It is illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone when driving. Heavy on the spot fines are frequent

The maximum speed limits are as follows:

  • 120kph/75mph on motorways and dual carriageways
  • 100kph/52mph on open roads (with hard shoulder of 1.5m/5ft)
  • 90kph/56mph on open roads (with no hard shoulder)
  • 50kph/31mph in built up areas
