Rowwen Heze in America

WE’VE just had a puente in Spain when everyone takes a day off work close to the weekend and according to my records November bodes a pretty quiet time. And my favourite band Rowwen Heze was playing their Annual Big Tent Concert called Slotconcert 2010 in America – which is in Holland. So guess where I headed...

The tent is bigger than a football pitch and along with five bars, three huge toilets a disco entrance foyer and cloakroom there was plenty of room for the 14,000 people who came to the gigs over two nights.

Good job really because the normal population of America is only 2,000. This small town in North Limburg, Holland suddenly grows in population every year for this mega event.

I flew via Eindhoven from Malaga and arrived in America.

For all the knocks they get I must say that without Ryanair I wouldn’t be able to enjoy these trips.

My local form of transport was, of course, a bike and before and after the concert I pedalled many hours. Such a change from the mountains here.

The concert was unbelievable and being a party band the atmosphere was amazing.

The Dutch though do have some strange habits. At 2€ a beer you would think they would drink every drop but no custom has it, a bit like the way the Spanish always leave a bit in the glass, the Dutch then chuck the plastic glass over each other.

Another weird custom at Rowwen Heze concerts is that all the young men rip each other shirts off and make skipping ropes with them.

Seeing 2,000 plus semi-naked men skipping in a concert hall adds a strange touch to the events.

Sweating from all the heat I left the concert at 2am.

I couldn’t help noticing that the queue to buy T-shirts after the concert was huge. At 18€ a T-shirt it was good business as it was cold outside.

Clever people these Dutch from America.
